Young People's Offices: getting involved in local issues

The Problem

Every young person should be given the opportunity to get involved with local projects, as they are a valuable asset to the development of new initiatives and ideas. This should expand past youth groups, and local projects, and evolve into something bigger, a place or venue that young people can exercise responsibility - and be provided with the opportunity to be actively involved in the design and development of their own communities.

The Social Invention

An office provided by the local authority or community offering young people the ability to be involved and supported working alongside adults in partnership is already tried and tested in Peterborough, UK.

Through recording our progress on web pages using technology within the office, we can extend our voices globally to include decision making, therefore giving us the ability to effectively review services and organisations within our area. This information is then read by many other young people, disseminating the data across the City and further a field. The feedback from young people is now sought after in Peterborough by many local and national organisations that have developed beneficial partnerships with us, giving services the opportunity to grow more effectively and, equally, for young people to develop personally.

Overall the implementation of the Young People?s Office has offered services better value for money and has developed a steady platform for which young people?s views can be heard. Not only is it a young person?s right to participate in decision making within their City, it is also their right to have a say in how Government money is spent towards their needs. Article 12 of the United Nations UN Convention states that ?Every young person has a right to a say in decisions that affect them?. Our vision is that not only is this more effectively brought across, but that it is done globally.
