Reducing challenging behaviour by building confidence

The Problem

The vicious cycle that results when communication problems lead to extreme frustration, which leads to violent behaviour, which often results in individuals being treated in ways that make them even more frustrated and violent.

The Social Invention

People with some types of disability, particularly autism, frequently lose self-esteem when they reach adulthood because they fail to achieve and become more and more isolated from the rest of society. Helping them to make small gains builds self-confidence, and this increased self-esteem has a direct effect upon their challenging behaviour, which reduces as they learn more appropriate ways of communicating their feelings. This has a knock on effect upon their effects upon others, and ultimately a profound effect upon the cost of their care. So by deliberately concentrating upon self-esteem building, quality of life increases and costs reduce dramatically.
